Service Upgrades

What is a Service Upgrade?
Well first let's get a definition of a service. According to the Dictionary for the Electrician, a service is; conductors and equipment for delivering energy from the electricity supply system to the wiring system of the premises served.

So a Service Upgrade is when you replace the existing conductors and equipment to allow more amperage (power) to flow into the premises served.

How do I know if my service is in need of an upgrade? First, if you have a 60 amp service (usually indicated by screw in fuses instead of breaker) you need to upgrade. In today's homes 60 amps is not adequate to power all the electrical gadgets we have. Or if you currently have a 100 amp service and have more than 20 circuits or wires feeding into the panel. This is not always the case but a very good rule of thumb. If your not sure contact Donco Electric to receive a free in house estimate and opinion.

What is the procedure in upgrading my service? Depending in which city and which power companies jurisdiction you live, the procedure can vary. However, the following is a good rule of thumb.

First, contact Donco Electric to receive free estimates, this allows you to hopefully get the best value. We will pull all applicable permits to ensure the upgrade will be performed legally. We will contact the planning department of the local utility provider.

Next, Donco Electric will perform the upgrade, including making sure you get a new panel as well as a new meter can. The city will come into your home to inspect the upgrade, and the local utility will receive city clearance to upgrade the power into the premises. Resulting in a complete Service Upgrade.
